The Dog Who Taught Me About Racism

My dog Stormy is, by any reasonable measure, a sweetheart. He’s an English Staffy, small, stocky, and absurdly friendly. The kind of dog who throws his whole body into greeting children, who has never met a toddler he didn’t want to lick. He plays beautifully with almost every dog he meets at the park.

Almost.

There are two exceptions. Border Collies send him into an immediate, focused aggression; not fear, not excitement, just a leap-first reaction that’s entirely specific to that breed. And tiny white fluffy dogs, the Maltese types, terrify him. He’ll back away, tail down, like he’s seen a ghost.

No other breed gets either reaction. Labradors, kelpies, greyhounds, other staffies; all fine. It’s just Border Collies and small white fluffies that flip something in him.

I don’t know Stormy’s full history before he came to me, but I’d bet money on what happened: somewhere in his past, a Border Collie went after him, and somewhere else, a small white fluffy dog did too. Two bad experiences, each with a single animal, generalised into a rule about an entire category. His brain didn’t file those encounters as “that one dog was scary.” It filed them as “dogs that look like that are scary.” One data point became a category-wide prediction, applied automatically and instantly, every single time, with no conscious reasoning involved at all.

This is, more or less, exactly how human in-group and out-group bias works and understanding the mechanism in a dog makes it a lot easier to see clearly in ourselves, where it’s usually tangled up in defensiveness and denial.

The brain is a prediction machine, and it hates uncertainty

Human brains, like Stormy’s, are built to generalise from limited experience. It’s a survival feature, not a bug. If our ancestors had to relearn from scratch every time whether a particular rustle in the grass was dangerous, they wouldn’t have lasted long. The brain’s solution is to build categories quickly, often from very few examples, and then apply those categories automatically to anything that seems to fit, long before conscious thought gets involved.

The trouble is that this same machinery, when applied to people rather than rustling grass, produces racial and ethnic bias through an almost identical process. A person doesn’t need a lifetime of data to form an association between a group and a trait. A handful of vivid experiences, a string of media stories, a joke repeated enough times by family members, or simply growing up in a community that subtly signals who belongs and who doesn’t, any of these can be enough. The brain does what it always does: it builds a category, generalises from limited input, and then runs that category as a fast, automatic prediction whenever it encounters someone who appears to fit it.

This is the essence of what’s called implicit bias: associations that operate beneath conscious awareness, often contradicting what someone would say they believe if asked directly. People can sincerely hold egalitarian values and still carry automatic, learned associations that shape split-second reactions: who they cross the street to avoid, whose CV gets a second look, whose voice they trust in a meeting. It’s Stormy leaping at the Border Collie before he’s had a chance to “decide” anything. The reaction comes first; the justification, if there is one, comes after.

In-groups feel safe by default; out-groups have to prove themselves

There’s a second layer to this beyond simple learned fear, and it shows up in how readily Stormy plays with almost everyone. His baseline setting is open and trusting. Most dogs get the benefit of the doubt. It’s only specific, narrow categories that trigger an exception.

Human in-group bias works on a similar asymmetry. We tend to extend automatic trust, warmth, and the benefit of the doubt to people who look like us, sound like us, or come from groups we identify with; our in-group. People outside that group don’t start from the same baseline. They have to actively demonstrate trustworthiness before they’re extended the same warmth that in-group members get by default. This isn’t usually conscious or deliberate, and that’s precisely what makes it so resistant to good intentions alone. Someone can genuinely want to treat everyone equally and still be running a system that hands out trust unevenly before they’ve had a chance to think about it.

This asymmetry shows up everywhere once you start looking for it: in hiring decisions, in how quickly someone is presumed competent versus incompetent, in whose mistakes are read as a character flaw versus an aberration, in who gets the relaxed version of a conversation and who gets the guarded one.

Categories can be unlearned — but it takes deliberate counter-evidence

Here’s the more hopeful part of the story, and it’s also visible in Stormy. His fear isn’t fixed. Slow, repeated, positive exposure to calm Border Collies can soften that reaction over time. It won’t happen by him simply being told Border Collies are fine. It happens through accumulated counter-evidence that contradicts the category his brain built.

Human bias responds to the same logic, even if our self-image makes this harder to accept than it is for a dog. Our brains are plastic and continually changing. Implicit associations shift through repeated, meaningful contact with individuals who don’t fit the learned category. Enough real experience that the brain has to update its prediction. This is part of why diverse teams, integrated communities, and genuine cross-group friendships have such measurable effects on reducing bias. They give the brain new examples that contradict the old, narrow rule.

The other piece is slowing down. Stormy’s leap at a Border Collie happens faster than thought, there’s no moment where he weighs the evidence. Humans have something he doesn’t: the capacity to notice the automatic reaction and ask whether it’s actually true this time, in this specific case, with this specific person. That pause is one of the few genuinely effective tools against implicit bias that the research consistently supports. It doesn’t delete the learned association. It just buys enough time for a better answer to compete with the automatic one.

The point isn’t guilt  

None of this is a reason for self-flagellation, in dogs or in people. Stormy isn’t a bad dog because he’s wary of fluffy white dogs; he’s a dog whose brain did exactly what brains are built to do with the experiences he had. The same goes for us. Understanding bias as a predictable output of normal cognitive machinery rather than as a moral failing reserved for bad people makes it easier to actually examine honestly, rather than defensively denying it exists.

The goal isn’t to feel bad about having a brain that generalises. It’s to know that it does, to notice when it’s running an outdated rule, and to give it enough new evidence to write a better one.
